Some impressive numbers of organic world in 2018

The trend of organic food is increasingly prevalent in Switzerland in particular and the world in general.

In Switzerland, retail sales of organic vegetables and fruits continue to increase, most commonly carrots, tomatoes, pepper, apples, bananas and lemons. According to the Swiss Federal Agricultural Office (FOAG), from September 2016 to August 2016, sales of these items increased by 7% and 13% respectively. Meanwhile, sales of ordinary vegetables decreased by 3%, sales of ordinary fruits increased by only 1%.

Organic varieties of vegetables and fruits also increased significantly. In 2017, Swiss organic food sales reached US $ 2.6 billion, more than 8% from the previous year, market share increased from 8.4% to 9% and cultivated area increased to 14.4 %. Bio-Suisse Organic Agriculture Organization (Switzerland) said that milk and organic cheese are the two most profitable items. Similarly, the world organic food market continues to grow in previous years.

According to experts, global organic food sales in 2017 exceeded 95 billion USD, of which Europe accounted for 37 billion USD. The organic food market is growing strongly in European countries, especially Germany, France and Denmark. The German organic food market has surpassed $ 11 billion while the figure in France is $ 9.4 billion, doubling in 5 years. Denmark continues to be the leading organic country in Europe as organic food sales increase by 23% in 2017, increasing organic market share to 13.3% and exceeding Germany (5.4%), France. (4.2%).

This result is a great success for both the government and the Danish people. During the past three decades, the Danish government has issued a series of policies to support and develop organic agriculture while people show consistent support for clean food.

Despite many achievements, Europe still ranks second in the world in organic food, behind North America. In 2016, North American organic revenue increased by 1.4% to 38 billion USD. The data published by the International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements (IFOAM) at the world’s leading organic exhibition BIOFACH 2018 shows that this upward trend will continue in the coming years.
